Selective modulation of interhemispheric connectivity by transcranial alternating current stimulation influences binaural integration

چکیده
Significance Sensory processing depends upon the integration of widely distributed neural assemblies. During every day listening, our ears receive different information (due to interaural time and amplitude differences) it is known that both hemispheres extract acoustic features. Nonetheless, features belonging same source become integrated. It has been suggested brain overcomes this “binding problem” by synchronization oscillatory activity across relevant regions. Here we probe interhemispheric as a mechanism for feature binding using bihemispheric transcranial alternating current stimulation. Concurrent functional MRI reveals antiphase stimulation auditory areas changes effective connectivity between these areas, change in predicts perceptual dichotic stimuli.

متن کاملTranscranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)
Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) seems likely to open a new era of the field of noninvasive electrical stimulation of the human brain by directly interfering with cortical rhythms. It is expected to synchronize (by one single resonance frequency) or desynchronize (e.g., by the application of several frequencies) cortical oscillations. If applied long enough it may cause neuro...

to the gamma band (Varela et al., 2001). This resonance-like interplay between externally applied and internally generated regional oscillatory activity may prove a powerful approach to manipulate brain activity. So far, investigations of tACS effects on cognitive performance have been limited to visual and somatosensory perception (Feurra et al., 2011b), and motor control (Pogosyan et al., 200...
متن کاملTranscranial Alternating Current Stimulation Attenuates Neuronal Adaptation.
We previously showed that brief application of 2 mA (peak-to-peak) transcranial currents alternating at 10 Hz significantly reduces motion adaptation in humans. This is but one of many behavioral studies showing that weak currents applied to the scalp modulate neural processing. Transcranial stimulation has been shown to improve perception, learning, and a range of clinical symptoms. Few studie...
متن کاملEntrainment of Brain Oscillations by Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation
Novel methods for neuronal entrainment [1-4] provide the unique opportunity to modulate perceptually relevant brain oscillations [5, 6] in a frequency-specific manner and to study their functional impact on distinct cognitive functions. Recently, evidence has emerged that tACS (transcranial alternating current stimulation) can modulate cortical oscillations [7-9]. However, the study of electrop...
